This post is way overdue but two Sundays ago I was invited for an exclusive Local LEVO lunch at Gina Bianchini’s place. Gina is one of Silicon Valley’s top entrepreneurs and is well known as the co-founder of Ning along with Marc Andreessen (co-founder of Netscape Communications). Gina is now working on her privately funded startup, Mightybell and I got a chance to chat with her and a lovely group of ladies over career advice and what it’s like to start your own company.
Among a group of 20, I was one of the youngest and most women have had already been working for a few years. This lunch really gave me the opportunity to internalize advice from negotiating salary to finding the right time for a career change.
One point made my Gina that I took to heart was to view “feedback as a gift.” Her view on feedback gave a new outlook on constructive criticism and made me realize that feedback can only help me become a better version of myself. Of course receiving feedback can be a little difficult at times, but the person giving the feedback is putting themselves in an awkward position (no one likes to break bad news!) to help you out.
While discussing startups and entrepreneurship Gina cautioned to stay away from startups where the founder created the company because “he/she has always dreamed to be an entrepreneur.”An entrepreneur does not have any substance to him/her if they don’t have a mission to accomplish. In the end she advised to gravitate towards “startups with souls”
Great event. Great people. Oh and did I forget to mention the food truck that served delicious Oaxacan food??
